    Competence objectives of the study unit
    The student gains basic knowledge and skills in first aid as to various kinds of accidents and illnesses onboard a vessel, in accordance with STCWCode: A-VI/1-3, A-VI/2-1, A-III/4, A-III/5.

    None
    Content of the study unit
    • first aid principles
    • first aid onboard vessels, the contents of the first aid kit
    • elementary knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the vital functions
    • resuscitation
    • first aid in the following situations:
    o the most common attacks of illness: chest pains, stroke, diabetes and epilepsy
    o wounds and major bleeding
    o shock
    o fractures, joint and muscle injuries
    o burns and scalds
    o hypothermia and frost bites
    o poisonings
    o examination and moving of an injured person

    Can use different sources of information and apply the knowledge in various first aid situations onboard
    Identifies the need for help and can raise the alarm
    Works with consideration of own safety and so that the risks of further damage to oneself or the victim are minimized, also taking into account the profession's ecological principles
    Can act immediately in different first aid situations, independently and responsibly according to current first aid recommendations.
    Master the basic resuscitation and use of AED, the methods of securing free airway, the methods of stopping large external bleeding, and the first aid measures in shock
    Is familiar with continued first aid measures in various accidents or attacks of illnesses onboard
    In a first aid situation, manages to cooperate and organize the own and the group's activities in a professional manner
