The student is familiar with navigation, cargo handling, sea-manship and leadership, maritime radio communications and measures taken in emergency and medical situations according to the Onboard Training Record Book and with the onboard work of the officer of the watch.
The aim of the onboard training is that the student learns
• to apply the knowledge he/she has picked up during the studies
• to integrate theory and practice
• to critically examine his/her skills
• the work routines of the vessel both in port and at sea
• the rules of the working life
• to adapt to the vessel as a social environment
• to deepen his/her professional competence
• interaction
• English language and intercultural communication
The onboard training is recorded in the Onboard Training Record Book, ”Uppföljningsbok för handledd praktik, STCW II/1, vaktstyrman" which has been drawn up for this purpose.
The onboard training is arranged at shipping companies (and on vessels) which are ISM -certified. The shipping company, the vessel and the Degree Programme choose persons who are responsible for the instruction during the onboard training period.
