Teachers, students and specialists of Construction Engineering and Building Conservation meet to focus on sustaining the built heritage in the Baltic Sea Region. The course is held in cooperation between Uppsala University, Estonian Academy of Arts and Novia University of Applied Sciences.
Understanding of the built heritage from different professional angles is promoted by bringing the different disciplines and cultures of the partners together. Students, teachers and experts of the cooperating partners EAA and UU are invited to join this intensive course.
The intensive course deals with the concept of life cycle analysis and sustainability in both modern timber construction and in the preservation of old timber buildings.
We will focus on the life cycle of a wooden structure from forest management, raw material, sawmill, building industry, construction site, maintenance, re-use. Students will learn thru lectures and workshops as well as excursions. We will get acquainted with the life cycle analysis using LCA software and be able to discuss the differences between modern wooden constructions and traditional historic buildings being renovated.
Thus, the knowledge of life cycle and sustainability for wooden constructions will become deeper for both students and teachers as they get to experience it thru excursions and from a more theoretical perspective. The aim is also the achieve a discussion on ethics and sustainability.
