Intensive course for members of the Nordic-Baltic Network of Engineering. The course is financed by Nordplus.
Teachers, students and specialists of Construction Engineering and Building Conservation meet to focus on sustaining the built heritage in the Baltic Sea Region. The course is held in cooperation between Uppsala University, Estonian Academy of Arts and Novia University of Applied Sciences.
Understanding of the built heritage from different professional angles is promoted by bringing the different disciplines and cultures of the partners together. Students, teachers and experts of the cooperating partners EAA and UU are invited to join this intensive course.
The intensive course deals with traditional methods for lime production and how to use lime mortar and lime paint. Workshops will cover the complete process of producing lime. Students will try “selecting and breaking the stones in the quarry”, “building the field kiln or filling the kiln with limestone” and “different ways of slaking the lime”.
Lectures include topics such as “Different types of lime kilns and lime production” and “Estonian medieval wall paintings - research and the technical aspects of the mortar preparation and wall-painting techniques”. We will visit Lümanda lime storage, Kudjape cemetery and Kuressaare Castle.
Course consists of mandatory lectures, intensive course excursion and reporting. All parts of the course must be completed in time in order to be approved in the course.
