    Competence objectives of the study unit
    The student shall understand the various objectives one has when cultivating potatoes and sugar beets and is able to choose appropriate cultivation planning and technology on the basis of plant physiological premises. The student shall know the central parameters with reference to product quality and know how different quality-related objectives are met.

    Content of the study unit
    Production chains for potatoes and sugar beets with emphasis on the cultivation measures relevant to the individual crops
    The history, morphology, systematics, anatomy and developmental stages of potato and sugar beet
    Purpose of potato cultivation (early cultivation / early potatoes, food potato cultivation, cultivation of seed potatoes, production of starch potatoes and potatoes for the food industry and other industrial purposes)
    Cultivation planning and conditions for soil, climate, plant sequence, cultivation material (varieties), seeds, germination and settling (potatoes)
    Soil cultivation, nutritional needs and fertilizers
    Maintenance measures such as cupping (potatoes) and irrigation
    Plant protection measures, preventive measures, mechanical and chemical weed control and regulation of fungal and viral diseases and pests
    Blast killing (potatoes), picking up, handling and storage (sugar beet storage)
    Quality aspects and issues related to environment and food safety permeate the entire course
