The study unit Production and Processing of Natural Fibers in Novia Open UAS is an education developed to support "Life long learning" and at the samed time an elective study unit for agricultural students in Novias Degree Programme in Bioeconomy.
The study unit Production an Processing of Natural fibers, 15 ECTS, is related to the historical background, connected to the situation today and aiming at future development of production, processing, marketing and selling of natural fibers.
Production an Processing of Natural fibers, 15 ECTS, is a study unit with three separate courses. You can apply to each course separately, but the courses are supporting each other and forming a connected and functioning study unit:
Production of Natural fibers, 5 ECTS
Processing of Natural Fibers, 5 ECTS
Marketing and Selling of Natural Fibers, 5 ECTS
Development
The study unit Production and Processing of Natural Fibers is based on an identified need for development of professional skills in the field of natural fibers.
The demands on ecological, economical, social- and cultural sustainability in the rural enterprises is expected to increase as the global challenges, described in United Nations SDG:s, in Agenda 2030, in the European Unions "Green Deal" and coming CAP-program from 2023. Climate- and biodiversity goals on many different levels and national goals regarding peat lands and wet lands motivates long term sustainable cultivation. An increased production of domestic natural fibers supports increased diversification and sustainability in the Finnish agriculture. The usage of new natural fiber plants with potential for textile and building purposes is expected to increase in the future.
The study unit Production and Processing of Natural Fibers is developed in cooperation with universities, advisory organizations and rural entrepreneurs. A Natural fiber seminar in October 2021 and a follow up seminar in April 2022 supports the development of the study unit.
Experts also teach in the courses in the study unit.

The target group for the study unit is everyone interested in the topic.
No special prerequisites.
Students need access to computer or pad with internet connection, headphones, a microphone and a webcam.
The main language in the study unit is Swedish, but English and Finnish can be used in some lectures, in the assignments and in part of the discussions and in counselling.

Objective
The Student:
- has an understanding of the economy of the domestic production and processing of natural fibers
- can plan a sustainable production and processing of natural fibers
- can perform profitability calculations for different forms of production of natural fibers
- can identify and evaluate natural fiber resources for production, processing, marketing and selling
