The Student:
- can apply relevant legislation, national strategies, and policies related to mental health and substance abuse care
- demonstrates knowledge of the most common mental health disorders and their impact on individuals and society
- understands the influence of climate change and global events on mental well-being and can consider these factors in patient care
- is familiar with a range of treatment and nursing care methods in mental health and substance abuse care, including safe and appropriate medication management
- can assess care needs in situations involving acute psychiatric illness and respond appropriately
- can evaluate a patient’s or client’s guidance needs and available resources, and can support and empower individuals and their families to participate in care
- understands the structure and functions of the mental health care pathway and service system
- can identify patterns of risky use, harmful use, substance abuse, addiction, and co-dependency, and respond with appropriate interventions
