Wood Structures 2Laajuus (6 cr)

Code: BYV22KP06

Credits

6 op

Objective

The student:
- is able to work in a structural design team for the planning of ordinary and more demanding wooden structures according to Eurocode 5 and according to the national Land Use and Building Act § 120 d and e (17.1.2014/41) normal and difficult tasks
- is also able to use building information modeling (BIM) techniques in the design phase

Content

Can design:
- different mechanical joints.
- holes and recesses in beams.
- straight, pulp, saddle, curved and boomerang beam with consideration of torque, shear force, allowable deflection and tilting.
- glulam and laminate wood frame frames.
- stability of hall as a whole unit.
- the siding of trusses.
Basic knowledge of fire dimensioning of wood structures.

Qualifications

Wood structures 1, Building Stability and FEM

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Knows different mechanical connections.
Know what influences where holes and recesses can be made. Know the central properties of pulp, saddle, curved and boomerang beams.
Knows about three-way frames and
-bows of glulam and laminated wood
Know the basics for stabilizing a wooden hall.
Knows about the siding of trusses.
Know the basics of how wood structures withstand fire.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Can design different mechanical joints.
Can design holes and recesses in beams. Can dimension straight, pulp, saddle, curved and boomerang beam with consideration of torque, shear force, allowable deflection and tilting.
Can design glulam and laminate wood frame frames. Can dimension the stability of the hall.
Can dimension the siding of trusses.
Has basic knowledge of fire engineering dimensioning of wood structures.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can design different types of joints. Is familiar with effects that depend on fabrication (curvature, slab cutting) and shape (non-linear stress distribution, tensile stresses perpendicular to the fiber direction).
Can design three-joint frames and arches of glulam and laminated wood.
Has good knowledge of fire-technical dimensioning of wood structures.
