Objective

Students:

- understands the basics of toplining and songwriting and its role in the songwriting process.

- can identify basic elements of song lyrics such as; verse, chorus and melodic patterns.

- have a cultural and historical understanding of songwriting.

- have knowledge of creating original and meaningful song lyrics and melodies by using metaphors, imagery, emotions and stories through song lyrics.

- understand different song structures and how they affect the listening experience and can create their own lyrics in a professional way

- can participate in creative collaborative processes and work with other songwriters and musicians.

Content

- Introduction to toplining and songwriting
- Historical background and development of the songwriting process.
- Basic elements of toplining and songwriting in terms of form, structure and melodic patterns.
- Brainstorming ideas for lyrics and melodies.
- Use of metaphors, imagery and emotional expression.
- Analyzing different song structures and how they affect the listening experience.
- Creating own lyrics and melodies individually and in groups.

To pass the course, students must actively participate in class and complete all assignments.
