Objective
After completing the course (general didactics, 3 credits), students are expected to demonstrate basic knowledge of teaching and learning by
- Defining key concepts in didactics and describing their function in the didactic process.
- Understand the role of the curriculum as a guiding document and how it can be used as a basis for planning and goal setting.
- Identify general models of teaching methods and approaches.
- Observe and reflect on teaching and classroom interaction.
After completing the course (subject didactics, 2 credits), the student is also expected to
- Identify and discuss the special features of subjects based on the curriculum.
- Reason about basic subject didactic theories and methods.
- Analyse and discuss teaching and learning from the perspective of the subject teacher.
General skills that the course contributes to include
- Skills for analytical and systematic thinking.
- Critical and ethical thinking.
Content
Central concepts in didactics: Curricula (values, mission and general objectives), teaching methods and approaches, assessment (the course comprises 5 credits of which 2 credits are subject didactics).

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Grade 1: The learning outcomes are met but the knowledge and skills are assessed as superficial.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
- Grade 3: The learning outcomes are met and the knowledge and skills are assessed as good. Students show evidence of being able to problematise and reflect on the course themes.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
- Grade 5: The learning outcomes are more than well met and the skills are assessed as excellent. The examination assignments are of a high level in terms of content and students problematise and reflect on the course themes.

- The course belongs to pedagogical studies for teachers, basic studies.
- The course is organised in cooperation with the teacher education programme at Åbo Akademi University, which is also the examiner for 60 credits in pedagogical studies for teachers.
