Objective

After passing the course the student is expected to:
- be able to define, identify and describe basic concepts in cartography and geographical information systems (GIS)
- be able to understand basic principles of cartography and GIS
- be able to execute, explain and defend the basic principles of cartographic presentation
- be able to compare and critically evaluate methods for cartographic presentation

Content

The course content is as follows:
- the basic concept of cartography and regulations for different maps.
- the main stage of map making.
- the most common map projections
- the most common map products in our country
- freely available numeric map material in our country
- the basics of Geographic Information Systems
- compile their own map production with a GIS program

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Can read and interpret different types of maps
Knows the terminology of cartography
Knows suppliers of numeric map data
Know the basics of GIS

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Understands the principles of color reproduction in print and display
Can produce simpler theme maps
Knows about classification methods
Can procure data

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can apply the principles of color reproduction in print and display
Can apply classification methods when producing theme maps
Can use a GIS program for calculating maps
