Objective
The Student:
- have skills in the clinical laboratory examination process, especially the preanalytical phase (preparations, equipment, the process of examination and the specimen collection)
- are familiar with quality development and management
- realize the importance of good co-operation between the different units in the caring community as a prerequisite for the good quality of laboratory examinations.
- consider security and occupational safety
- be aware of how to make sustainable choices in the preanalytical phase
Content
Laboratory diagnostics in the context of holistic patient care
Reference values, sample materials/forms
Common patient examinations in clinical laboratories: blood, secretion, and cell samples
Patient preparation, pre-analytical factors, and guiding the patient to sample collection (in Swedish, Finnish, and English)
Venipuncture and capillary sampling, including factors affecting the sampling process
Point-of-care testing – glucose, hemoglobin, INR, CRP, ECG, among others
Other sample types – microbiological, cytological, and aspirated fluids
Sample handling, storage, and transport
Sustainability on multiple levels
Occupational safety, security, and relevant legislation
Practical exercises included
