Objective

The student can:
- describe common wood-based building and frame solutions used in Finnish residential buildings.
- select appropriate construction solutions based on technical, environmental and economic criteria.
- explain how different wood products and material choices affect the technical properties, environmental impact and service life of the structure.
- perform basic dimensioning and strength calculations for small wooden structures in accordance with current standards.

Content

Design of simple wooden structures, such as beams and simple columns
Design of bending and shear stress, stamp pressure and allowable deflections.
Design of simpler connections.
Principles for different design solutions for load-bearing structures of wood.
Fire sectioning (with disc constructions) of wooden structures.

Qualifications

The educational module Introduction to Building Techniques and the math course Functions and Equations 1, or similar knowledge
