Objective

The student will be able to:
- master the basics of strength of materials
- perform elementary dimensioning calculations for typical structural elements in buildings
- identify the strength risks for different types of load-bearing structures
- perform clear calculations and present them
- correctly use the concepts and terminology of the subject area
- search for appropriate sources to expand their knowledge in the field

Content

- Introduction to solid mechanĂ­cs
- Tensile, compressive and shear stresses
- Hooke's law and the modulus of elasticity
- The most common construction materials and their properties
- Thermal tensions
- Bending strength, bending moment, moment of inertia and bending resistance
- Shear force and bending moment diagram
- Deflection
- Torsion strength
- Fatigue strength
- Buckling strength
- Lateral instability, buckling and other stability problems
- Strength terminology in Swedish, Finnish and English

Qualifications

The educational module Introduction to Building Techniques and the math course Functions and Equations 1 and 2 and Geometry and Vectors, or similar knowledge
