Objective
The student
- understands and can apply the basics of animal husbandry with emphasis on breeding and heritability
- has become acquainted with current breeding methods for swine and cattle
- understands the terms genotype and gene frequency and how they affect breeding results, and can realise the benefit of test pairs
Content
The basics of genetics and animal breeding, different relationships between genetics and breeding, breeding evaluation and heritability
Breeding doctrine with different calculation exercises
Different breeding methods in pig breeding (farm test and bile selection)
Different breeding methods in cattle breeding (selection of semen bulls and breeding evaluation)
Different concepts such as genotype and gene frequency and how they affect the breeding result, the practical benefits of test pairings
Modern genetic technology, such as cloning and gene modification, current legislation and various ethical aspects of modern breeding
