Objective

Student:
- knows the difference between the characteristics of different battery types
- knows basic electrical technology in connection with batteries
- master the basics of choosing battery materials and types
- masters various definitions within battery technology and can interpret charge and discharge curves for different battery types

Content

- the structure of the battery
- basic electrical concepts (charge, current, voltage, resistance)
- measurement of current and voltage
- the battery in context (DC circuits)
- Ohms law
- Kirschoff's laws
- battery capacity and energy
- parallel and series connection
- power and energy
- the ratio between power and energy
- battery types; cylindrical, prismatic, pouch
- charging and discharging of batteries, number of cycles, lifetime parameters
- charging and discharging at different ambient temperatures
- general battery definitions; energy density, SOC, C-rate, SOH etc.
- storage and handling of batteries
- protection circuits (CID, BMS), thermal surge, temperature and handling sensitivity

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Knows the basic concepts and structure of a battery.
Knows the concepts that describe storage capacity.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Knows different battery technologies and their characteristics.
Knows safety in connection with different battery types and protection circuits

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Is well versed in basic electrotechnical concepts within battery technology and its practical significance.
Can calculate and analyze capacity and charge/discharge curves.
