    Competence objectives of the study unit
    Learning skills
    The student masters the basics of real number calculation. The student is able to determine the value of an expression using calculation tools. The student is familiar with power calculation rules and polynomial processing rules. The student is able to solve simple algebraic equations and groups of equations. The student is able to perform linear interpolation on table values.

    Working community competence
    The student is able to present the steps of algebraic problem solving both in written and oral form. The student masters the graphical representation of a mathematical model. The student is able to work in different groups and also to lead the group in their efforts to find solutions to algebraic problems.

    Quality management competence
    The student is able to evaluate the accuracy of mathematical calculations with both approximate methods and accurate calculations. The student is able to evaluate the error in various measurements and to take this into account when making measurements.

    Content of the study unit
    Arithmetic:
    - Different formats of real numbers, calculations and order of calculations
    - Estimates and accuracy of numerical representation

    Algebraic Expressions:
    - Mathematical expression and its value
    - Extended power concept
    - Rules for calculating powers and roots
    - Polynomials

    Algebraic Equations:
    - First and second degree equation and their solution
    - Linear groups of equations and their solution
    - Directly and inversely proportionality
    - Proportional to potential and root
    - Linear interpolation

    Function and its graph:
    - Graphs of first and second degree polynomial functions
    - Fractional functions and their graphs
    Assessment criteria
    Assessment criteria – satisfactory (1-2)
    The student is able to solve simple basic and first degree equations and groups of equations. They know the basics of exponential and logarithmic computation and are able to solve simple exponential equations. The student knows the basics of linear interpolation and is able to solve a simply formulated interpolation problem.
    Assessment criteria – good (3-4)
    The student is also able to solve non-standard equations and groups of equations. He / she is able to apply linear interpolation even in non-standard problem situations.
    Assessment criteria – excellent (5)
    The student masters the steps of solving very different equations. He / she is able to formulate a practical problem into a mathematical equation and solve it. He / she is able to acquire knowledge himself / herself in order to solve mathematical problems.
