ORAL SKILLS
Copes satisfactorily in everyday language situations in working life. Able to convey a message even if the communication is slow and imprecise and may require effort from both parties to the conversation.
Interaction skills: Able to communicate easily and can take the initiative in familiar situations. Sometimes needs support from the interlocutor.
Vocabulary: Adequate command of industry-specific and general vocabulary. The inadequacy of the vocabulary and the errors in word choice limit communication. The ability to use replacement expressions is lacking.
Structures: Uses simple, common basic structures reasonably correctly. More demanding constructions cause difficulties.
Clear and partially disturbing influence of other languages is present.
Pronunciation: Pronunciation is imprecise but mostly understandable. The influence of other languages is clear.
WRITING SKILLS
The student:
- copes satisfactorily in predictable professional and industry-specific language situations.
- can write a simple coherent text. The message is conveyed even if the errors can make communication difficult.
- can write simple industry-specific coherent text, which is comprehensible and appropriate in the context. The text can be sparse and contain repeated errors, which can make it difficult to read.
- has a satisfactory command of industry-specific and general vocabulary. An insufficient vocabulary limits communication. Deficits in the ability to use replacement expressions occur.
- uses the most common basic constructions unilaterally and partially incorrectly. The influence of other languages is clear and partly disturbing.

Assessment methods and criteria
The course is assessed based on the student's performance during the course and the exam.
The assessment is based on individual oral and written tasks, small group discussions and course exams. The course requires active participation during lessons and has compulsory attendance. Absence affects the course code negatively.
Students must demonstrate such knowledge of Swedish as, according to the law (424/2003), is required of public employees. This means that students should demonstrate satisfactory (test result 1, 2 or 3) or good (test result 4 or 5) ability to use Finnish in speech and writing.
