Objective
In demanding and exceptionally demanding structural design:
The student is able to apply
- plastics theory
- torsion
The student is able to take into account
- how the eccentricity of a load causes torsion on a structure and is able to determine the torsional stress of a rectangular profile
- in plasticity theory, the possibility of load redistribution and the conditions for the formation of a plastic joint
The student is able to calculate and examine
- the stress distribution according to the plasticity theory
The student is able to identify
- the difference in the calculation of the elastic and plastic bending resistance
Content
- Plastics theory
- Torsion
The following skills are practiced:
Making clear and professional calculations
Presentation of own calculations
Using appropriate sources to expand your own knowledge
Terminology in Finnish, Swedish and English
Location and time
Lectures held in the spring term 2025. The course is carried out as online studies i.e., lectures tied to time but not to place.
Materials
- lecture notes
- material in Moodle
- Rakentajain kalenteri, Mechanics handbook, etc.
Teaching methods
Lectures combined with exercises once a week.
Mandatory homework that encourages you to calculate and provides a routine for solving mechanical problems.
The content and program of the course, working methods and requirements are described in more detail in the weekly plan, which is available in the Moodle course.
Exam schedules
The grade of the course is based on the four homework assignments. 40% of the points must be obtained from the homework in order for the course to be considered completed. If necessary and when in advanced agreed on, the course homework can be renewed within a certain period of time when this has been agreed with the teacher.
Completion alternatives
The grade of the course is based on the four homework assignments. 40% of the points must be obtained from the homework in order for the course to be considered completed.
If necessary and when in advanced agreed on, the course homework can be renewed within a certain period of time when this has been agreed with the teacher.
Student workload
Attendance at lectures is not mandatory.
Students are expected to attend each lecture in order to be able to complete the course.
The course has a steady load due to homework. Every homework and lecture requires preparation.
Further information
Students need a computer with dual screens, good internet connection, web cam and headset, to be able to participate in this course.
Evaluation scale
H-5
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Students fulfill the objectives of the course, and in the relevant realization compulsory parts, at a satisfactory level.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Students fulfill the objectives of the course, and in the relevant realization compulsory parts, at a good level.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Students fulfill the objectives of the course, and in the relevant realization compulsory parts, at an excellent level.
Assessment methods and criteria
The grade for the course is determined entirely by the four exercises. In order to pass, the exercises must be successfully completed. Homework must receive 40% of the points for the course to be considered completed.
Assessment criteria, fail (0)
The student has not shown sufficient basic knowledge of the subject. That is, the student completes less than 40% of the total points in the homeworks.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Course grades 1-5 are based on the homework result. The course is graded according to a linear grading scale. 40% of the total number of points in homeworks are required to pass the course.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
Course grades 1-5 are based on the homework result. The course is graded according to a linear grading scale. 40% of the total number of points in homeworks are required to pass the course.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Course grades 1-5 are based on the homework result. The course is graded according to a linear grading scale. 40% of the total number of points in homeworks are required to pass the course.
