Objective
The student
- can identify different types of soil
- understands and can account for significant earth and soil properties
- can choose a suitable method for soil cultivation based on a specific situation
- can identify and describe the botanical and biological properties of common crops, as well as of weeds occurring in autumn sown crops
- can assess the pros and cons of different methods for the establishment of autumn-seed crops and can plan establishment and management measures to minimise the risk of winter damage
- knows common breeds of domesticated animals in Finland
- can perform practical work in cowsheds concerning cattle and milk production
Content
Crop:
- soil science and soil assessment
- the use of agricultural machinery in autumn farming and the establishment of crops in the autumn
- weed occurrence in autumn-sown fields
Livestock:
- practical work in livestock production
- pet breeds
Sustainable development in agriculture (bioeconomy) is an essential part of the course
Qualifications
No previous knowledge required
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student should participate actively in the given lessons (100 %)
Accepted level of internship and practical training at the farm

Only Swedish and Finnish references in the course, see the reference list and the moodle site.

Students workload is 2 x 27 h, that means 54 h
In class 22 h and self studies 22 h
Self studies according to the specified plan distributed at the course introduction
Waterproof shoes and warm and waterproof clothes for field studies outside, paper for notices
The internship at Västankvarn farm is according to the schedule on the farm and is supervised by the employees on the farm
Special diets should be noticed at the office on the farm
