Objective

The student
- possesses basic knowledge of biochemistry, general genetics and plant breeding
- knows the historical development of plant breeding
- has mastered the biochemical and genetic basics of plant breeding and animal husbandry
- is aware of the key methods used in the practice of and understands the meaning of the term genetic modification
- knows the basics of and conditions for seed trade and seed cultivation in Finland

The basics of general genetics, plant breeding and animal breeding
Various plant breeding methods, including GMO
Cultivation development and cultivation trials
Seed production, sorting and trading in Finland
Seed control and surveillance in Finland

No previous knowledge required

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Written exam 50 % of the points for an acceptable grade, influence on the individual course grade (0 - 5) 50 %
Project work and assignments grade (0 - 5), influence on the individual course grade 50 %
Participation at farm trip and study visits at selected companies/organizations
