Objective

After completing the course, the student is expected to:

- be able to define, identify and describe basic machine elements
- be able to perform dimensioning calculations for certain basic machine elements used in mechanical designs.
- be able to compare and critically evaluate machine elements in order to understand the technical and economic connection in design choices.

Qualifications

Strenght of Materials 1

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Can calculate and dimension simple weld joints. Understands the difference between static and dynamically loaded joints.
Understands screw mechanics and load diagrams. Can design simple screw joints using thumb rules.
Understands the tension picture in shrinkage and compression joints.
Know the principles of various machine elements.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Can apply the standards for statically loaded and for dynamically loaded welded joints in the calculation of simple welded structures.
Can design and calculate simple screw and rivet joints.
Can design simple shrinkage and press fits.
Understands the possibilities and limitations of machine elements in designs.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can consider the impact of the service life and the impact of the load collector on dynamically loaded weld joints.
Can independently design demanding screws and rivets, and can use standards for dimensioning.
Can calculate shrinkage and press fits, and has knowledge of the materials and the impact of the surfaces.
Understands the technical and economic connections that the choice of machine elements entails.
