Objective
The student
- understand what a functioning dairy farming requires in terms of production control, animal care, production environment and feeding
- knows the factors and requirements from processors that affect dairy farming and can optimize it
- can take into account requirements from authorities and processors as well as requests from consumers
- knows how dairy farm production facilities should be designed taking into account the welfare and sustainable development of the animals.

General conditions for dairy farming in the EU and Finland
Different dairy breeds with emphasis on Finnish conditions
Milk quality and what affects it, milk handling at the dairy, milk with different protein composition
Requirements that dairy cows place on their production environment, feeding and care
New recruitment and the sustainability of dairy cows in rational milk production, advantages and disadvantages of different milking systems
Factors that affect the profitability of dairy farming, optimization of a sustainable and profitable milk production
The course is based on several of the global sustainability goals, mainly the goals of Responsible consumption and production and Good health and well-being.
