Descriptions

Palliative care is a human right for all people. Ageing of the population and growth in long-term illnesses are current global phenomena that are leading to an increase in the need for palliative care, especially in Europe. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a resolution recommending the integration of palliative care at all levels of healthcare.

Good palliative and end-of-life care is only possible by providing adequate training for professionals working at both basic and specialised levels. The level of higher education in palliative care varies in Finland and a specialist group of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has accordingly proposed that a recommended curriculum should be prepared for palliative care specialisation training.
