Environmental and natural resources challenges pertaining to climate change, global warming, conflicts, wars and mass immigration are not limited to one region or a country. This course is an intensive, hands-on introduction to urgent environmental and natural resources challenges with global implications, conflict management and participatory processes. At the end of this course, the students should be able to:
• Describe the basics of climate change-induced conflicts
• Reflect on individuals' and society's role in participatory processes and conflict management
• Reflect on the ethical concerns related to environmental challenges
• Gather information and reflect on its reliability and relevance
• Present their knowledge orally and in writing while using the basic skills of scientific writing
• Identify the current most important environmental and natural resources challenges globally and regionally
• Describe the various types of negotiations and climate and environmental agreements
• Explain why culture matters in practices of negotiations, decision making, conflict management and participatory process in different societies
• Identify the importance of cross-cultural differences when transplanting a policy, law or institution to a new context.
Content
The main topics of the course are:
• Global environmental trends
• Global environmental governance
• Conflict resolution challenges
• United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COP)
• Negotiation of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs)
• Domestic resource mobilisation in developing countries
• Cross-national cultural differences and their implications for negotiations, participatory processes and conflict management.
During classes, we will discuss real stories from different domains of environmental and natural resources challenges (e.g. political, social, economics) and compare different reactions across cultures and nations. Using the theories of dimensions of national culture, we will analyse the effect of cultural differences on plausible miscommunications or policy failures and discuss how to manage/avoid these challenges. Furthermore, we will discuss the procedure and methods of climate and environmental negotiations.
