- Hackathon with assignments from external clients

Location and time

The hackathon will be arranged in Turku on the 1st and 2nd of November, 2022. Physical presence is required of all participants. The hackathon will start with some pre-assignments already before this date. On the 1st in the afternoon, the companies involved will present their challenges, after which the groups will start working with the challenge at hand. The work will continue throughout the evening /night and continue to following morning. The groups will prepare and train pitches, supported by coaches and mentors. The solutions will be presented to the companies and a jury in the afternoon on the 2nd of November.

Materials

Material regarding circular economy; lectures, reports and internet links to current sources are provided in connection with the course Introduction to Circular Economy. In addition, the students are expected to search for sources connected to the specific challenge they are working on.

Teaching methods

The course is connected to the course Introduction to Circular Economy, carried out as self-studies on the Moodle platform during September and October. The course is mandatory for those how aim to attend Hackathon I and Hackathon II during the fall 2022 and spring 2023, unless student has proven knowledge about the subject from previous studies or work experience.

Employer connections

The hackathons are carried out in cooperation with companies within the CCEF project.

Exam schedules

The hackathon will take place on the 1st and 2nd of November.

International connections

The hackathon is carried out in an international atmosphere, with participants from different faculties and with different backgrounds. Therefore the language of the hackathon will be mainly English.

Assessment methods and criteria

The Student:
- is familiar with the latest trends when it comes to sustainability in business
- knows where companies can find help assistance with sustainability challenges in Finland, but also internationally
- knows where to find sufficient and accurate information about the subject
- knows how to identify controversies and problems within the subject (e.g. green washing)
- can identify sustainable business opportunities and can give suggestions how to make these opportunities profitable for the company

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

Failing to participate in hackathon or failing to hand in assignments.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Student participates in hackathon but contribution is small and results are not useful for the company. The assignments are handed in late and are of poor quality.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Student participates actively in hackathon and contributes to the group work. Results are useful for the company. The assignments are handed in timely and meet the requirements.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student participates very actively in hackathon, shows initiative and ambition to come up with the best solution for the challenge at hand. The results are innovative and can be applied by the company. The assignments are handed in timely and are of a high quality.
