Objective

The student:
- knows the most common soils and soil types in Finland and how they were formed
- knows how the ice age affected the geology of the Nordic countries
- knows the effects of the soil type on the properties of the soil
- can identify soil types
- knows the mobility of water in soil and the nutrient cycle
- understands how the buffer capacity of the soil works

Content

The most common soils in Finland and how they were formed
The importance of minerals to soil properties
The nutrient cycle
Soil as a carbon deposit
Water mobility in the soil
The impact of the microclimate on soil temperature
How the microclimate can be affected by silvicultural measures
A site mapping is performed in the field
The course is based on several of the global sustainability goals, mainly the goal of Life on land
