Objective

The Student:
- knows the basic concepts of sociology and current research areas of particular importance to social workers
- can identify the basic features and changes in Finnish society from a social science perspective
- understands the factors that affect human and group social behavior

-social roles
-socialization and identity
-social stratification
-poverty and social exclusion
- close relationships and their importance
- disease and health from a sociological perspective
- gender, gender minorities, gender, and gender equality
-ethnicity, religion, and culture from a sociological perspective

Location and time

Coursework in autumn 2023 according to schedule. All field studies are compulsory and absences are compensated

Materials

Giddens, Anthony and Sutton, Philip W. 2021. Sociology. Lund: Student literature.
as well as additional literature that is presented in connection with the lectures and on Moodle.

Teaching methods

Lectures, small group discussions, literature studies, self-studies, assignments.

Completion alternatives

Participation in the first lecture is mandatory for everyone as more information is given about execution and examination.

Individual tasks: compulsory participation in the lectures, article analysis (deadline 10.12) and lecture diary including own reflections (deadline 18.12)
Group tasks: Portfolio about a specific theme (deadline 19.11), group presentation (deadline 16.12)

Student workload

The scope of the course is 5 credits, which corresponds to 135 hours of work for students, including close study opportunities, group assignment, literature studies and examination assignments.

The student demonstrates superficial competence and basic understanding of the subject
