Objective

The student
- understands the demands of dairy cows on their production environment, feeding and care
- knows which factors affect the results of milk production and can optimise them
- knows how dairy farm production facilities should be designed to be efficient, effective and humane
- understands how feeding, accommodation and calving intervals affect the fertility of dairy cows and are aware of osteoporosis, fertility disorders and fertility treatments

General conditions for milk production in the EU and Finland
Milk production's historical development and future opportunities in Finland
Different milk breeds with emphasis on Finnish conditions, anatomy and physiology and the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of different milk breeds
Breeding work in milk production, specific breeding goals such as high milk yield, good udder health, and litter (lack of horns)
Requirements that dairy cows impose on their production environment, feeding and care
Design of efficient, efficient and at the same time pleasant production facilities for dairy cows
Relationship between feeding, barn environment, care, calving interval and milk fertility
