Objective

After completing the course, the student should have hands-on experience of apparatus and measurement methods used in energy engineering . The student should be able to analyze measured, interpret results, and present calculations and conclusions in written form.

Content

Exercises with available equipment, for example:
Heat flow through insulated walls
Heat exchanger
Pipe flow
Pump and fan
Compressor
Refrigeration uni
ORC unit
Solar cells and solar panels
Pelton turbine

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Has participated in all laboratory sessions.
Can interpret meters and register data correctly.
Can keep systematic notes on the measurement procedure.
Can, in most cases, apply formulas correctly in calculations based on measured quantities.
Can write a report that contains all the essential structural elements and present results in an understandable way.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Can describe the design and operating principle of used equipment.
Can choose device settings to achieve reasonable accuracy and variation in measured data.
Can judge whether calculated results are reasonable and are consistent with theory.
Can write a report that is essentially correct regarding units, notations, rounding, table structure and graphical presentation.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can explain how and why measured quantities are related to each other.
Can plan a series of measurements so that the measurement procedure is efficient and systematic and that the obtained data covers the entire available area in a representative way.
Can make relevant and accurate conclusions based on measured data and calculated results.
Can identify possible sources of error and suggest improvements in the experimental procedure.
Can write a report that is balanced, economical and virtually free of formal errors.
Can present data and the analysis process in a systematic and easy to read manner.
