Objective
After completing the course, students should know the mathematical methods on which the FE tools are based. They can explain different types of analysis for which the tool can be used and can also decide on suitable models for the most common analyzes. Students should be able to independently perform linear static analyzes on ordinary machine elements and also carry out non-linear analyzes with supervision.
Content
- Introduction
- Linear static models
- Modal analysis
- Response analysis
- Thermal analysis
- Buckling and cracking
- Contact voltage
- Optimization
- Non-linear static models
Evaluation scale

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Can describe the basic relationship on which the FE method is based.
Knows about the most fundamental factors that influence the idealization of FE models.
Knows the difference between different analytical methods and can decide which analyzes are suitable for basic strength analysis.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Can determine which element types and boundary conditions are suitable for the most common FE analyzes.
Understands how basic idealization of real geometry can both improve and impair the reliability of results in an FE analysis.
Can use more advanced analyzes, partly with the help of breathing.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Can independently build FE models taking into account suitable algorithms.
Can independently decide how a model should be constructed and idealized from the physical model without jeopardizing the accuracy of the results.
Can independently perform advanced analyzes in both structural analysis and thermodynamics.
