Objective

After completing the course, the student has the ability to:
- dimension the most common structural elements in a home.
- Sizing beams of solid wood, kertopuu and glulam
- design wooden parts under pressure and bending
- dimension to vibration
- compile a wall section and floor plan containing wooden structures, for private homes

Content

Material about wood as material
- Wood strengths
- Bending, shear, deflection and stamping pressure
- Buckling, as well as cooperative bending and buckling
- The design of typical structures

Evaluation scale

H-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Knows the central properties of the wood for use as construction material. Familiar with how moisture and long-term loads effect affect the strength of the wood.
Can dimension massive beams, with respect to bending moment, transverse force and deflection. Is also familiar with the phenomenon of stamping pressure. Familiar with the design of ordinary wooden structures. Can show in the drawing plan the calculated construction elements.
Familiar with the most common types of joints for wood structures

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Is familiar with the principles of classification of wood. Can select strengths for timber, taking into account the humidity of the environment and the duration of the load.
Can design massive beams and pillars, with respect to bending moment, transverse force, deflection and stamping pressure. Familiar with how houses and corresponding buildings are stabilized. Can draw planes and cross sections for small houses.
Can calculate simple nail joints and know what to consider when selecting joints.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can calculate strengths of wood taking into account the humidity of the environment and the duration of the load.
Can optimize the use of different structural elements in a small house or similar building. Know the design of the most common construction solutions in a small house. Can calculate stabilization for small houses. Can draw planes, cuts and detail drawings for small houses.
Can calculate the required number of nails for the most common nail joints.
