Objective

The student is able to manage the officer’s duties in connection with different emergency situations and safety exercises and drills in English.

Content

Content of the study unit
• Background: SMCP: GMDSS procedures (Appendix), Part 4 Ch. B, Ch. D. Distress Traffic on the radio (GMDSS) Parts 3.1 (Distress Communications), 3.2 (Urgency Communications). SMCP: Part 3.6 - VTS Standard Phrases (Message Markers)
• Medical English (Radio Medical - Services).
• Practical exercises/presentations in having life-boat drills, instructing how to use a life-jacket, realising man-over-board drills, describing evacuation routes and giving other instructions when evacuating the vessel.

Materials

The course will use Maritime English material, such as
IALA publications (VHF, VTS, etc)
IMO publications (SMCP)
Online publications (MarEng)

Parts of the GRM (General Resource Management) can also be used.

Other materials deemed suitable by the lecturers.

For a pass grade:
- Active participation in online activities
- Pass grades from completed assignments

Further information

Since the course works as a platform for cooperation for students from different geographical regions, the content can be adjusted to fit the needs of the particular realisation. Communication is the common theme in all realisations.
