Objective

Student
- can specify and evaluate the most common qualitative and quantitative research methods
- can reproduce the research process and apply the different phases of the research process
- can use different methods for qualitative data collection and data analysis in nursing care research
- can use the most common methods for quantitative data collection and analysis
- can make simple statistical calculations and tests
- has readiness to independently and under supervision carry out thesis work and development work
- has knowledge of different care theories and care models and their areas of application
- can apply health theories and care models in different care settings
- has the ability to analyze scientific knowledge and can apply the knowledge in the nursing care work
- can reflect on how evidence-based knowledge can be applied in the nursing care work

The conduction of the course is during weeks 35-50
Quantitative methods: see schedule
Lectures online: Nursing theory 2x5 w 35-38, Qualitative research methods 2xh w 35 - 38.seminars w 40 4 lectuires qualitative research methodology and 4 lectures nursing theory, if possible as studies on place

Nursing theory: Wiklund Gustin, L. 2012. Nursing theories in clinical practice. Nature and Culture. Alligood, M. 2018. Nursing Theorists and their work. Elsevier and other optional relevant literature.

Litterature according to the theme of students choice. At Moodle a detailed information of the themes for each lecture is outlined

Teaching methods

Quantitative methods: lectures, exercises in computer class, as well as written presentation
Lectures online, seminars on place if possible due to the situation with corona, own written work with possibility to individual and group supervision. Obligatory presence at introduction and seminars

Quantitative methods: the written assignment must be submitted within a month after the end of this part of the course.
W 40 Seminar where the written assignments in Nursign theory and Qualitative research is presented. Retake at the two next re- examinations

Nursing theory is 1½ cu which is equivalent to 40 hour of which 12 are scheduled lectures and seminars and the rest is the students' own work
Qualitative research methodology is 2½ cu which is equivalent to 67 hours work of which 20 are scheduled lectures and seminars and the rest is the students' own work
Quantitative research methodology is 2 cu which is equivalent to 54 hours work of which 12 are scheduled lectures and seminars and the rest is the students' own work

Assessment methods and criteria

Nursing theory and qualitative research methods are evaluated 1-5

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

Quantitative methods: the student does not understand and cannot apply statistical concepts and cannot perform an adequate statistical analysis.
Nursing theory: The written work is not submitted on time and / or the work is not presented at scheduled time for seminar
Qualitative methodology: Data collection is not done / incorrectly performed. The student has not participated / contributed to the joint group work in data analysis

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Quantitative methods: notable weaknesses are found in the student's understanding and application of statistical concepts, or the statistical analysis is not adequately performed.
Nursing theory: The assessment is based on a score system published on Moodle
Qualitative methodology: The assessment is based on criteria published on Moodle

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Quantitative methods: the student predominantly demonstrates a good understanding of and can apply statistical concepts, and only minor errors are found in the statistical analysis.
Nursing theory: The assessment is based on a score system published on Moodle
Qualitative methodology: The assessment is based on criteria published on Moodle

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Quantitative methods: the student demonstrates a complete understanding of statistical concepts and makes only insignificant errors when applying them, and performs a statistical analysis without errors.
Nursing theory: The assessment is based on a score system published on Moodle
Qualitative methodology: The assessment is based on criteria published on Moodle
