Descriptions

The studies to be a biomedical laboratory scientist includes collection of specimens, sample preparation and performing analyzes as well as patient-near examinations using apparatus. The studies include handwork, which requires dexterity and accuracy.

Bioanalytics is based on biomedical laboratory science with the support of knowledge in biomedical science. One aspect of the programme is the emphasis on sustainable development and awareness of the global goals included in Agenda 2030.

The work of the biomedical laboratory scientist contains many different tasks and can be quite diverse in various fields.

The studies contain small-group work, lectures, independent and virtual studies, laboratory work, various examinations, work-life-based projects. Supervised clinical studies (internships) are included in the studies already in the second semester and continue with 8-10 week periods in clinical laboratories at health centers, hospitals and in the private sector. The clinical studies provide opportunities for students to grow into the profession and make valuable contacts in future working lives.

The program provides international qualifications at the bachelor's level (Bachelor) within the EU. After graduation, the biomedical laboratory scientist is expert in laboratory work and can plan, document, realize, lead, and develop the laboratory activities, both independently and in collaboration with other professional groups. A biomedical laboratory scientist can work in various laboratories in health care, in public and private institutions as well as in research and companies.

Objective

Bioscientific competence:
The biomedical laboratory scientist understands the basic functions of the human body as well as pathological deviations and can apply the knowledge in their own activities.
The biomedical laboratory scientist uses bioscientific knowledge and judgment in the preanalytical, analytical, and postanalytical phases of the clinical laboratory test process.
The biomedical laboratory scientist understands the importance of laboratory test results in the promotion of health, in the diagnosis of disease, in the follow-up of care, and in the development of care methods.

Pre-analytical competence:
The biomedical laboratory scientist can expertly use the laboratory nomenclature and explain the areas of use of the laboratory tests.
The biomedical laboratory scientist is responsible for the pre-analytical phase: customer-oriented guidance and advice, sampling, sample handling, storage and transport in accordance with the quality criteria.
The biomedical laboratory scientist takes care of the patient's safety, security and well-being in the sampling process and when performing examinations close to the patient.
The biomedical laboratory scientist shows care and respect in collaboration with patients and customers, and is familiar with international and national recommendations as well as the legislation that forms the basis of the work.

Analytical competence:
In accordance with quality agreements and recommendations, the biomedical laboratory scientist can perform patient-near examinations in clinical physiology, neurophysiology and nuclear medicine as well as perform laboratory examinations in clinical hematology and immunohematology, clinical biochemistry and immunology, clinical histology and cytology, clinical microbiology and genetics.
The biomedical laboratory scientist has analytical and methodological knowledge, and can participate in the development of new applications and methods according to the needs of the operation, taking into account quality recommendations and environmental requirements.

Post-analytical competence:
The biomedical laboratory scientist can assess the reliability of laboratory test results and the need for urgent communication of results to the care unit, and understands their importance in relation to the patient's overall care.

Expert and ethical competence:
The biomedical laboratory scientist can critically evaluate and assess factors in relation to the laboratory test process.
The biomedical laboratory scientist has communicative skills, pedagogical skills and an ethical approach.
The biomedical laboratory scientist can collaborate with other professionals and can act as an expert in relation to clinical laboratory activities.
