Description of the curriculum:
The performing arts explore life through the body, space and materials. By using these elements, performing arts create a unique opportunity for people to reflect on themselves, their context and the deeper aspects of life. The performing arts education at Novia wants to emphasise the interdisciplinary identity of the subject and stresses the need to identify and defend different ways of embodying, staging and framing phenomena that interest the students themselves.
Novia's performing arts education is firmly rooted in both art education and artistic practice. We see performing arts as a powerful platform that can serve as an arena for democratic social debate. Therefore, Novia's performing arts offer in-depth knowledge in participatory theatre forms and devising processes that give children and young people direct opportunities to influence the end result. We integrate artistic and pedagogical methods to create a dynamic and holistic learning environment.
The studies offer basic training in acting, directing, dramaturgy and stage production, which offers broad opportunities to study different methods and tools for creating and performing theatre. Great emphasis is placed on ensemble work and the development of the student's personal artistic identity and profile. Joint courses with the other programmes and optional studies create the conditions for innovative interdisciplinary projects.
We see the body as an important source of knowledge and defend how learning and research can be seen as a bodily process. The body carries stories, memories and cultural references. By exploring the body's movements, shapes and boundaries, performing artists can convey complex themes and contexts. The programme offers several movement courses in dance, acrobatics, mask making, clowning, physical theatre and circus. The programme's unique combination of performing arts and pedagogy particularly emphasises the body as a key component in how we learn and understand the world around us.
The programme works continuously to strengthen the status of performing arts educators in the workplace and to drive the development of an active and constant dialogue with the surrounding society. We place great emphasis on understanding how performing arts educators can promote cultural entrepreneurship by creating and running their own projects, collaborating with other artists and reaching out to different audiences.
Our performing arts programme aims to be a global platform where creativity and artistic development know no boundaries. We regularly invite international guest lecturers - prominent performing artists, directors and art educators - to share their experiences and insights with our students. These meetings provide a unique insight into different cultural perspectives and create networks within and across national borders. Novia University of Applied Sciences strives for extensive global cooperation and long-term strategic partnerships. Good international references will give the university the opportunity and credibility to work for a global, open and sustainable society.
Internships can be done in professional theatres, cultural institutions, schools, drama/theatre clubs, radio and TV productions and through studies at our international partner universities. The internship is completed during the full autumn semester of the third year abroad or in Finland.

The degree project consists of two parts: an artistic or artistic-pedagogical part and a written part. The work is carried out during the fourth year. The thesis can be a commissioned work or a development work for an organisation, a school, a theatre or similar. Degree projects are shown and presented during a theatre festival organised by the student.
Development
The curriculum is continuously developed on the base of the student's evaluations and professional requirements as well in consultation with other national and international educational institutions for theatre and professional experts. Internationalization:
The course of studies is an european exchange programme. Erasmus regularly provides student and teacher exchanges with universities in Germany, Lithuania, Norway and the Netherlands.
The international workshops are a recurring feature for both students and teachers.
We have a large part of places for regular internship in Finland and abroad.
In addition, in the framework of our projects, we have many partners and customers from the work field.
