Objective

The student:
- masters the basics of solid mechanics
- can make elementary dimensioning calculations for the typical frame elements in buildings
- can identify the strength risks for different types of load-bearing structures.
- can make clear calculations and present them

Content

- Introduction to solid mechanícs
- Tensile, compressive and shear stresses
- Hooke's law and the modulus of elasticity
- The most common construction materials and their properties
- Thermal tensions
- Bending strength, bending moment, moment of inertia and bending resistance
- Shear force and bending moment diagram
- Deflection
- Torsion strength
- Fatigue strength
- Buckling strength
- Lateral instability, buckling and other stability problems
- Strength terminology in Swedish, Finnish and English

Professional skills practiced:
To be able to present their calculations
To know the subject area's concepts and terminology
To search for suitable sources to expand their knowledge in the field
