Objective

Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

- read and understand basic Latin texts and translate them into English with the help of a
dictionary;
- understand basic Latin grammar and syntax, and identify the most common forms in a Latin text;
- Reference some typical features of Roman culture and ancient history based on the themes covered in the course;
- translate basic vocabulary from Latin to English.

Aims and contents: Studies in Latin provide students with a greater understanding of Western culture and of many European languages. After successful completion of the course, students will be able to translate basic Latin texts into English and have an understanding of Roman culture and its significance for Western civilization.

Further information

Registration for the course and attendance at the beginning of the first lecture is mandatory. Admittance to the course is given to those present at the start of the first lecture, in order of registration. Thus, you might be admitted to the course by attending the first lecture, despite being among the 23+ on the list. The date you registered for the course will count should you not be accepted to a certain course section and be referred to another one instead. Overriding circumstances may necessitate the merger of two or more sections. Therefore, the final list of participants will be confirmed only at the begining of each course section.

Assessment methods and criteria

Reading comprehension and translation

- Is able to understand the central content in basic Latin texts with the help of a dictionary.
- Is able to produce an adequate, but clearly imperfect translation into English, which may include whole sentences translated incorrectly.

Grammar

- Demonstrates adequate knowledge of the basic morphology and syntax of Latin, but shows gaps in some areas.
- Recognizes some of the most common grammatical forms in a Latin text

Culture of ancient Rome

- Can mention some typical features of Roman culture and ancient history based on the themes covered in the course, such as the historical development of the Roman Empire, Roman society, everyday life in ancient Rome, and stories and myths from ancient classical literature

Vocabulary

- Can translate the most basic vocabulary from Latin to English despite significant shortcomings

Reading comprehension and translation

- Can, with the help of a dictionary, understand the main points in basic Latin texts.
- Can produce a satisfactory but partially flawed translation into English, occasionally translating individual words incorrectly

Grammar

- Demonstrates satisfactory knowledge of the basic morphology and syntax of Latin but has gaps in some areas.
- Can define some of the most common grammatical forms in a Latin text

Culture of ancient Rome

- Can briefly explain some phenomena in Roman culture and ancient history based on the themes covered in the course.

Vocabulary

- Can, with the help of a dictionary, understand basic Latin texts in detail.
- Can produce a translation that is almost flawless in terms of content.

Grammar

- Demonstrates a strong understanding of the basic morphology and syntax of Latin.
- Can explain how various grammatical forms are used in a Latin text.

Culture of ancient Rome

- Can provide an overview of the larger cultural and historical themes covered in the course.
- Understands the connections between different cultural phenomena in antiquity Vocabulary
- Can translate basic vocabulary from Latin to English.

Forms of assessment
Examination is based on the learning objectives of the course. Active and regular participation, minimum 75% attendance in group sessions, successful completion of tests and assignments within stipulated deadlines, mid-term and final exams.

- Uppvisar nöjaktiga kunskaper i latinets grundläggande form- och satslära men har bristande kunskaper på några målområden.
- Känner igen några av de vanligaste grammatiska formerna i en latinsk text.

Antikens kultur

- Kan nämna några typiska drag i den romerska kulturen och antikens historia utgående från de teman som tas upp under kursen, t.ex. Romarrikets historiska utveckling, det romerska samhället, det vardagliga livet i antiken, berättelser och myter i antikens litteratur

Ordförråd

- Kan översätta den allra mest grundläggande vokabulären från latin till svenska trots väsentliga brister.

Skriftliga och muntliga examinationsuppgifter som grundar sig på kursens lärandemål. Aktivt och regelbundet deltagande i undervisningen, uppgifter som ingår i kursen, mellan- och slutförhör
