Objective

The student
- understands factors that affect sheep farming's profitability
- knows the requirements that sheep impose on their production environment and care in wool and meat production
- can optimise sheep production based on prevailing factors and requirements

Content

General conditions for sheep breeding in the EU and Finland
The sheep development's historical development and future prospects in Finland
Pasture management and the importance of sheep in landscaping and possible financial support
Sheep anatomy and physiology
Feeding, various feed raw materials, roughage and concentrates, minerals and vitamins, feed state calculations
Selection of different breeds of sheep for different purposes, wool, meat and milk production, sheep breeding grounds, meat breeds
Requirements that may be imposed on their production environment and care for wool and meat and milk production respectively
Special breeding forms such as continuous paralysis, pros and cons
Special requirements for attention related to paralysis, possible problems and current care measures related to paralysis, for example many lambs / ewes and the need for supplemental feeding with milk replacements, rejection of lambs and acute symptoms of lambs with vitamin E deficiency
Potential sheep diseases, preventive measures and treatment
Prerequisites for local and regional slaughterhouses in various forms, eg cooperative or mobile slaughterhouses
