Objective

The student
- recognizes the geological and ecological formation processes of peatlands
- can consider how draining affects the wetland ecosystem and the climate
- can assess the draining ability of the peatland and can plan the forest draining
- can apply water management measures when draining
- understands the changeable nutrient conditions of peatlands
- knows the peatlands as a sustainable natural resource
- can give silvicultural advice on the use of peatlands

Peatlands and their formation
Forest regeneration, thinning and continuous cover forestry on peatlands
Assessment of nutrient balance and fertilization needs
Assessment of draining needs and ability
Water management and draining
The role of peatlands in the carbon cycle
The course is based on several of the global sustainability goals, mainly the goals of Responsible consumption and production as well as Climate action.
