Objective
The student
- knows central product quality parameters in potato and sugar beet cultivation
- knows how to achieve different production goals in potato and sugar beet cultivation
Content
Production chains for potatoes and sugar beets with emphasis on the cultivation measures relevant to the individual crops
The history, morphology, systematics, anatomy and developmental stages of potato and sugar beet
Purpose of potato cultivation (early cultivation / early potatoes, food potato cultivation, cultivation of seed potatoes, production of starch potatoes and potatoes for the food industry and other industrial purposes)
Cultivation planning and conditions for soil, climate, plant sequence, cultivation material (varieties), seeds, germination and settling (potatoes)
Soil cultivation, nutritional needs and fertilizers
Maintenance measures such as cupping (potatoes) and irrigation
Plant protection measures, preventive measures, mechanical and chemical weed control and regulation of fungal and viral diseases and pests
Blast killing (potatoes), picking up, handling and storage (sugar beet storage)
Quality aspects and issues related to environment and food safety permeate the entire course
The course is based on several of the global sustainability goals, mainly the goals of Responsible production, ecosystems and biodiversity
