Only to a very limited extent, and when agreed in advance, you can participate in the teaching at a distance, and then so that you follow the "Rules for teaching at a distance" (available on the Moodle course). The course is largely based on work at the inventory site.

Materials

In addition to the materials available on the Moodle course, the following are also included:
- RT card, Ratu card
- Lämpökuvaus rakentamisessa. Sauli Paloniitty, Juho Paloniitty, Jouni Haimilahti.
- Anvisning om boendehälsa (Instructions on housing health). Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
- hometalkoot.fi
- Students' own building chemistry portfolio
- Finnish building regulations
- SFS standards

In addition, various literature is required depending on the object being inventoried: e.g.:
- material from archives
- Så byggdes husen 1880-1980. Björk, Kallsteius, Rappen
- Kerrostalot 1940-1960, Kerrostalot 1960-1975.
etc.

Teaching methods

The course is conducted in cooperation with the course "Fastighetsinventering och underhållsplan". The content of the lectures is shown in the weekly planning in Moodle.
The lectures start in the school, after which sampling and investigations are carried out at the inventory object.
Students work and report in groups. Attendance is an important part of the course. If a student has to be absent, it is important that he/she informs his/her own group about this.
Absence may be replaced with supplementary assignments. Some parts of the course have compulsory attendance. This is shown in the weekly planning on Moodle.
Students must bring the right equipment to the course sessions - both personal equipment and the necessary measuring equipment (the school's).

Employer connections

The inventory is carried out on a site with an external owner.

Exam schedules

The compulsory elements of the course are carried out in period 2. Examinations or retake examinations are not organised.

The course is assessed continuously. Some feedback and evaluation sessions are organised.

International connections

If necessary, the course is realised as an English-friendly course. This means that the groups that students work in must be able to function and communicate in English. Some of the course reporting and documentation may also be done in English.

Completion alternatives

The course is assessed continuously throughout the period.
Attendance is therefore an important element, as well as activity and initiative. The ability to co-operate and manage a project is also valued. Co-operation in the group and with all course participants is part of the assessment. How well the student seeks and absorbs knowledge in the subject area and professional skills is an important part of the course grade. Reporting is an important part of the course.
Individual reports are assessed and form one of the bases for the course grade.

Student workload

The student's total time use for completion of the course is estimated to be about 80 hours, of which about 32 hours are scheduled and the rest is work that the student does outside scheduled class time.
Attendance at scheduled time is mandatory.

Further information

Students need the correct protective equipment for some tasks and are responsible for using it correctly. Students need to have their own personal protective equipment, such as safety shoes and appropriate work clothes.

The degree thesis is part of the student's personal competence profile. In the degree thesis, the student will apply theoretical models to practical problems. The student must also show that they can handle complex problems independently within their area of competence and can work logically and methodically. The student should be able to work in a scientific way and use reference material and external sources of knowledge.

Content

The thesis consists of a practical application and an associated theoretical analysis. The written design must follow Novia's writing instructions for a degree thesis. The thesis also includes a public presentation of the thesis and a written maturity test.

In this degree program the thesis is 10 ECTS credits.

The degree thesis can be started when students have sufficient knowledge in the form of approved professional studies and methodology studies. The work begins with students drawing up a work and / or research plan for the process. The plan presents at least subject choices, language, work title, a preliminary outline and schedule. The plan must be approved by the head of the degree program. In connection with the approval of the plan, supervisors are appointed for degree work.

The degree thesis may consist of internal and / or external ordering work, collaborative projects or other work-related work. These may be, for example:
- an investigation (eg investigation, survey, analysis and / or evaluation)
- development work (eg development of working methods or activities)
- product development (eg prototype or model)

Materials

Novia's process description for degree thesis on Novia's intranet.
Additional information can be found in the realization in Peppi and on the Moodles page for the concerned the academic year and degree program.

The student
- understands the meaning of the built environment for man and society as well as the importance of building conservation in the management of the built environment
- has deepened his/her knowledge of the principal building materials and construction solutions as well as the cost structure of a renovation project
- knows how to survey old properties and plan complementary building parts.

Content

The course deals with the systematics of studying and presenting inventory results of an existing property.

The properties that are being studied are owned by either the city, municipality or any public utility organization.

The project work is an exercise in how one should be able to work in a group at work: to take responsibility for their share in the whole, to keep timetables, to communicate and, of course, to work for a common goal.

The project always has a client and the finished report is presented to him with power point mm media.

1. We exercise inventory of the constructs of a real object
2. We write a report on the object for the client of the work
3. we use the TALO 2000 classification
4. We use literature and web-based sources on historical buildings

The student:
* can plan, implement and evaluate a project of building a wooden structure
* is familiar with the professional field of construction
* can use tools applicable in project planning and project management
* is familiar with teambuilding and -development
* can work in groups and teams with individuals regardless of their background
* is familiar with the role and the responsibilities of a team leader
* is familiar with the most common construction and frame materials used in Finland and has experience of work in construction engineering as well as methods used for simple wooden structures
* understands how the choice of materials affects the design of the construction.

Content

The students work in the course in small project groups consisting of 5-10 people. Each group is assigned a construction project, i.e. an order for a smaller wooden construction by a customer. For students, this is an excellent opportunity to really test what project work entails, including customer relations, costing and marketing. The project also highlights the division of labor between clients, authorities, planners, work management, carpenters and other parties in the construction project. Students make drawings, contracts and other documents for their construction project.

The course deals with:
- Machine and tool lessons. Review of the most common wooden tools, how they work and work safety.
- Project management. The student learns to use tools in project planning and management and to work with others in groups and teams regardless of background. The working method CDIO (Concieve, Design, Implement and Operate) is used, which means that one takes care of a product's or service's life cycle from idea and design development to realization and use.
